Blind River has been drafted in the annual Kraft Hockeyville contest.

Mayor Sally Hagman announced the community and its arena are in the competition at Monday evening’s council meeting.

“This continues to be an exciting year for Blind River and we have just found out that we have been nominated to be a contender in the Kraft Hockeyville Contest,” she said.

As part of the competition residents can post stories and pictures related to hockey at the arena on the Kraft Hockeyville website.

“We would like to get as many pictures and experiences posted on the Kraft Hockeyville website. The Town of Blind River will have a link posted on the town website on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019 after 11 a.m,” the mayor said.

Top prize in the competition is $250,000 with the community potentially hosting an NHL pre-season game. Last year the community of Lucan won the competition with the money going toward upgrades to the community arena.

Kraft Hockeyville is an annual competition sponsored by Kraft Foods, the National Hockey League and the NHL Players’ Association in which communities compete to demonstrate their commitment to the sport of ice hockey.

Blind River supporters will be asked to post a story or comments about about the community spirit and passion for hockey in the town. They will also be asked to talk about the current arena and why it is important to the community and how a $250,000 prize would best be used to upgrade the arena.

The competition winner will be announced on March 30 with the top four announced on March 16.

“It takes a community to showcase what we have and we look forward to hearing your stories,” she urged residents.
