Blind River Mayor Sally Hagman took the time during her remarks to the public and council at Monday evening’s virtual council meeting to recognize the work done by the town’s Public Works employees.

Her remarks were made to coincide with National Public Works week being held this week from May 16 to 22.

“This crew of dedicated individuals get up in the wee hours of the morning and work evenings and weekends when required. They are the backbone of our community ensuring that we all live work and play in a safe environment,” mayor Hagman said.

“On behalf of Blind River council, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to you Mark Bender as Director of Public Works and to your team.”

Council approved a motion to recognize the week.

Mayor Hagman also recognized Blind River’s close working relationship with neighbouring Mississauga First Nation. She comments on that relationship prior to her remarks at each council meeting.

“As we begin this evening’s meeting, we take time to acknowledge and recognize, though we are gathered virtually, we are here today as a community on Robinson-Huron Treaty territory. The land upon which we are gathered is the traditional territory of the Anishinabek, Cree and Metis people,” she said.

“As we continue to learn and respect the past relationships with our Indigenous communities, we thank them for allowing us to work together in our communities and look forward to further strengthening these bonds in the spirit of reconciliation.”
