Blind River council has approved a request from two schools to use the town’s community centre as a safe haven in the event of a bomb threat or others risk.

The town had received a request from representatives with Blind River Public School and St. Mary’s Catholic School to use the community centre during emergency situations. The schools are operated by the Algoma District School Board and the Huron Superior Catholic School Board respectively.

Mayor Sue Jensen asked if a similar arrangement had been made from the boards of the two high schools and was told by clerk administrator Kathryn Scott that those boards would have to make a request to the town. She said any evacuation to the community centre would be the responsibility of the respective school boards under their own emergency planning policies.

Councillor Steven Wells asked what would happen if an evacuation at the schools happened when the community centre was already in use.

“That would be up to the board to determine a secondary evacuation plan,” Scott said.

Council gave its support to the request.
