Algoma Public Health is reporting the region's second COVID-19 death.

A notice issued today by APH says it will not share any additional information "out of respect for the family."

“I am deeply saddened that we have lost another life to COVID-19,” said APH medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Loo in the notice. “On behalf of Algoma Public Health, we offer our most sincere condolences to this person’s loved ones.”

"This tragic loss highlights the seriousness of this virus," the notice reads. "APH commends all those who have worked to prevent COVID-19 spread in our communities. Now more than ever, we ask every Algoma resident to do their part to protect our community, by staying home and avoiding close contact with others."

The first death related to COVID-19 was reported by APH on Jan. 18.

There are currently 12 active cases in Algoma, including one hospitalization.

In total, there have been 150 cases reported in the region since the beginning of the pandemic.

Over the last 14 days, cases have been confirmed in Sault Ste. Marie and area, central and east Algoma, and the Elliot Lake area.
