783 new COVID cases reported in Ontario today

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 783 new COVID-19 cases in today's update, and has reported five more deaths. 

According to data reported today, two people between 60 and 79 years old and three people over the age of 80 have died from COVID-19. One long-term care resident is among the deaths reported today. 

Seventy-five per cent of today's new cases were reported by four of Ontario's 34 health units. Of the 783 cases reported, 239 are from Toronto, 136 are from Peel, 127 are from York, and 89 are from Ottawa. 

In a breakdown of cases by age group, the province has indicated 51 per cent of the cases reported today are individuals under the age of 40. 

The province has also reported 109 new school-related cases today, including 55 student cases, 17 staff cases, and 37 unspecified cases. There have been 1,145 school-related cases reported by the province, and 686 of those cases have been reported in the last 14 days. The 1,145 cases are spread across 451 schools, and there are five schools closed because of COVID-19. 

There are 20 more daycare cases (15 children, five staff) also listed in the province's updates today. There have been 281 cases confirmed across 129 child care centres and homes and there are four centres and 20 homes currently closed because of COVID cases. 

According to the epidemiological summary today, another 24 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and six COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units. The province reports 779 more resolved cases, which are individuals whose symptoms started 14 days ago or more and who are not hospitalized. 

Of the 5,863 active, lab-confirmed cases in Ontario, 253 people are hospitalized, 62 people are in intensive care, and 31 people are on ventilators. 

To date, the province has reported 62,196 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 53,291 cases now resolved and 3,022 cases ending in death.

Public Health Ontario has reported another 39,961 COVID tests processed at provincial labs, with 36,314 awaiting results. The province has completed more than 4.5 million COVID tests since January.

The per cent positivity rate is now at three per cent for the province, meaning three per cent of the people tested for COVID are positive for the coronavirus.

The breakdown for the Northern Ontario health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 39 cases, rate of 34.1 per 100,000 population. There are five known active cases. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 40 cases, rate of 30.8 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 42 cases. There is one known active case. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 88, rate of 105.5 per 100,000 population. There are two known active cases. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 111 cases, rate of 55.8 per 100,000 population. There are two known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 19 cases, rate of 58.1 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 17 cases. There are no known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 68 cases, rate of 77.6 per 100,000. There are three known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 109 cases, rate of 72.7 per 100,000. There is one known active case. 

The Ontario rate of infection is 418.4.
