At the beginning of another work week, Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) is reporting 12 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the area. This includes at least one case that PHSD believes is a possible variant strain of COVID-19.

No new deaths were reported in Monday's daily update. Five deaths had been reported as a result of the outbreak at the Amberwood Suites retirement home from Jan. 15 to Jan. 21. There have been a total of seven deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Sudbury since March of 2020.

The new case count means there have been 464 confirmed cases in the local jurisdiction since COVID-19 case tracking began back in March of 2020.

PHSD has also reported there are now 77 active cases being monitored at this time.

This is an increase from the number of 67 active cases that were reported on the roster Sunday. The health unit said it means 387 cases have been resolved since the pandemic case count began locally.

PHSD also reports that of these new cases, all 12 were found to have occurred within the Greater Sudbury area.

As for the causes of those new cases, PHSD reports that eight of the cases are linked to an outbreak, and seven cases were close contact of a confirmed case, along with four cases that were listed as information pending or missing and one case listed with no known epidemiological link. The numbers reflect information provided from previously reported cases, but the health unit does not specify when those causes were determined.

At Health Sciences North, the daily hospital update page for today, Jan. 25, 2021 revealed that there are nine confirmed COVID patients at the hospital, with none being assigned to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). There are an additional seven other admitted patients being investigated for the coronavirus. None of the seven is assigned to the ICU.At the provincial level today, the Ontario government daily website reported there were 1958 new confirmed COVID-19 cases across the province.  Also today, the province reported 43 new deaths had occurred in the previous 24 hours.
