Ontario reports 1,740 new COVID cases today

This is the first time the daily case report has dropped below 1,800 since early December

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,740 new cases of COVID-19 today, the lowest daily report since Dec. 13.

The province is also reporting 63 deaths in its latest update, including 35 people who were residents at long-term care homes.

The deaths reported today include one person between 20 and 39 years old, three people between 40 and 59 years old, 19 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 40 people over the age of 80. 

Ontario reports 75 new COVID-related hospitalizations and eight new admissions to intensive care. 

The Jan. 25 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 2,261 new recoveries
  • 23,036 active cases, which is down from 23,620 yesterday
  • 1,466 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,398 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 383 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 397 yesterday) and 298 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 283 yesterday).
  • The province reported 30,717 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 5.9 per cent positivity rate. 
  • There is a backlog of 36,405 tests. To date, 9,375,676 tests have been completed.
  • Of the 1,740 cases reported today, 727 are from Toronto, 365 are from Peel, 157 are from York Region, and 41 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • There are 253 active outbreaks at long-term care homes, 153 at retirement homes and 98 at hospitals. 
  • Of the cases reported today there are 243 people under 19 years old, 636 people between 20 and 39 years old, 497 people between 40 and 59 years old, 252 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 110 people over the age of 80. 

 Vaccine update for Jan. 26:

  • There were 9,707 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on Jan. 25, up from 5,537 on Jan. 24.
  • As of 8 p.m. on Jan. 25, the province reports 295,817 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • There are 83,285 total vaccinations completed (both doses). The vaccines approved for use require two doses a few weeks apart.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 258,700 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 229,755 recoveries and 5,909 deaths, of which 3,462 were individuals living in long-term care homes.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,740.4 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. 

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 114.3 cases per 100,000 people from Jan. 16 to Jan. 22, which is a decrease of 20.7 per cent compared to Jan. 10 to Jan. 16 when the average weekly incidence rate was 144.1 cases per 100,000 people.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 150 cases, rate of 131.1 per 100,000 people. There are 11 known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 185 cases, rate of 142.6 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 186 cases. There are three known active cases.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 224 cases, rate of 268.5 per 100,000 people. There are 54 known active cases. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 468 cases, rate of 235.1 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 464 cases. There are 77 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 89 cases, rate of 272.3 per 100,000 people. There are three known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 249 cases, rate of 284 per 100,000 people. There are 15 known active cases. 
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 869 cases, rate of 579.5 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 879 cases. There are 150 known active cases.

The Ontario government has declared a state of emergency, the second since the start of the pandemic, and a stay at-home order is in effect until at least Feb. 11, 2021. There are additional measures in place for the shutdown, all of which can be found in this provincial breakdown.
