Ontario daily cases up 45 per cent with 257 confirmed today

After a five days of reporting daily case increases below 200, Public Health Ontario has confirmed 257 more cases of COVID-19 today. 

Of the new cases reported today, 182 are people between the ages of 20 and 39, and 48 are people aged 40 to 59. 

According to today's epidemiological report a majority of the cases reported today came from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, which reported 177 new cases to Public Health Ontario yesterday. 

On Friday the province reported 111 new cases, and that number climbed to 160 and 178 new cases reported on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. 

The province also confirmed seven more COVID-related deaths today, including three people between 60 and 79, and four people over the age of 80. 

To-date, the province has reported 2,665 deaths attributed to COVID-19, and 1,706 (64 per cent) of those deaths have been long-term care home residents. 

There have been 34,911 lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases reported by Public Health Ontario since the start of the pandemic, and 30,196 of those cases are now reported recovered. There are 3,009 active cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, and of those, 232 people have been hospitalized with the virus, including 46 patients in intensive care and 35 patients on ventilators. 

There were 27,127 tests processed in Ontario since yesterday's report.

There are 13 known active cases of the virus in Northern Ontario.

Today's provincial report includes data from Jan. 15 to June 28 and includes the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population. Data included on resolved cases and last known confirmed is from each health unit's respective website. The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:

• Algoma Public Health - 24 cases, rate of 21 per 100,000 population. All of the cases are resolved.

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 29 cases, rate of 22.4 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 30 cases. Of those, 29 are resolved and there has been one death. There are no known active cases.

• Porcupine Health Unit - 67, rate of 80.3 per 100,000 population. Of the confirmed cases, 57 are resolved and eight people have died. There are two known active cases of the virus. The last positive test was done June 21.

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 67 cases, rate of 33.7 per 100,000 population. There are 64 resolved cases and two people have died. There is one known active case.

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. The last positive tests were done April 28. All of the cases are resolved.

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 91 cases, rate of 60.7 per 100,000 population. The health unit has 90 cases listed, including 88 resolved cases and one person has died. There is one known active case, which is hospitalized.

• Northwestern Health Unit - 36 cases, rate of 41.1  per 100,000 population. There are 27 resolved cases, and 9 active ones.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 234.9.
