Ontario confirms 851 new COVID cases today

Today's report indicates a drop of 200 cases compared to yesterday's numbers

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 851 new cases of COVID-19 as well as six deaths and 679 recoveries in today's epidemiological report. 

After reporting more than 1,000 new cases yesterday for the first time ever, the province noted a drop of about 200 cases in today's report. 

The deaths reported today include one person between 20 and 39 years old (the 12th death reported in that age group in Ontario),  two people between 60 and 79 years old, and three people over the age of 80. Two of the people who died were residents at long-term care homes. 

Since yesterday's update, 28 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and five people have been admitted to the intensive care unit. 

There were 546 cases confirmed in people aged 20 to 59 years old in today's report. The province also reported 41 more residents of long-term care homes have tested positive for COVID-19. 

According to a breakdown of cases provided by Public Health Ontario, 281 of today's cases were reported by Toronto Public Health, 215 by Peel Public Health, 90 by York Region Public Health, and 76 by Ottawa Public Health. 

There are currently 7,286 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, including 295 people who are hospitalized. There are 78 COVID patients in intensive care units and 51 COVID patients on ventilators. 

There are 72 new school-related cases reported today, with 39 of those cases listed as students, four as staff, and 29 are unidentified. There have been 1,770 school-related COVID cases reported to date, and they are spread across 548 schools. There are no schools currently closed because of COVID-19. The province also confirmed nine new COVID cases in childcare settings. 

According to the province's public health agency, Ontario labs processed 28,652 tests since the last report, and there are 17,603 tests awaiting processing. The province's public health labs have now processed 4.9 million COVID tests. 

To date, there have been 71,224 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, and 60,839 of those cases (85.4 per cent) have been reported as recovered and 3,099 cases (4.4 per cent) reported as ending in death.

The breakdown for the Northern Ontario health units, at the time of today’s provincial update, is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 42 cases, rate of 36.7 per 100,000 population. There are three known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 45 cases, rate of 34.7 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 47 cases. There are three known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 95, rate of 113.9 per 100,000 population. There are five known active cases. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 122 cases, rate of 61.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 123 cases. There are 11 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 17 cases, rate of 52 per 100,000. There are no known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 71 cases, rate of 81 per 100,000. There are two known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 114 cases, rate of 76 per 100,000. There are four known active cases. 

The Ontario rate of infection is 479.2.
