Ontario confirms 625 new COVID cases today

The province has confirmed 625 new COVID-19 cases today, based on data reported by Ontario health units yesterday. 

Public Health Ontario has also reported four more deaths related to the coronavirus today, including one person between 60 and 79 years old and three people over the age of 80. Three of the deaths reported today were residents of long-term care homes. 

Another 17 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 since yesterday's report.

Of today's 625 cases, 288 were reported by Toronto Public Health, 64 by Ottawa Public Health, 97 by Peel Public Health, and another 41 by York Region Public Health. 

A majority of the new cases reported today are people under 40 (388 cases), and another 169 cases are individuals between 40 and 59 years old. 

To date, the province has reported 51,710 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19, and of those 43,907 people have recovered and another 2,848 people have died. 

There are currently 4,955 active cases of COVID-19 in Ontario including 150 people who are hospitalized with the coronavirus. There are 35 COVID patients in intensive care units and 17 of those patients are on ventilators. 

Since yesterday's report, the province has reported another 35,753 tests processed in a 24-hour period with 67,126 tests awaiting results. Ontario labs have processed 3.9 million COVID tests since January. 

The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 32 cases, rate of 28 per 100,000 population. There are two known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 38 cases, rate of 29.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 40 cases. There are no known active cases.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 83, rate of 99.5 per 100,000 population. There are three known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 106 cases, rate of 53.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 108 cases. There are six known active cases.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. There are no known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 51 cases, rate of 58.2 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 51 cases and one probable case. There are five known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 106 cases, rate of 70.7 per 100,000. There are two known active cases.

In northeastern Ontario, there have been 277 cases and the rate of infection is 48.8 per 100,000. The Ontario rate of infection is 347.9.
