Number of new provincial COVID-19 cases spikes to 491 today

The province also reported two additional deaths related to the coronavirus over the past 24 hours; There is a backlog of more than 65,000 tests awaiting results

The province's number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 continues to trend in the wrong direction with a 13 per cent increase in new cases over the past 24 hours.

On Thursday and Friday, there were 409 new cases reported by Public Health Ontario on each day. That number rose to 435 on Saturday. Today, the number has risen again — this time to 491 new cases in the past 24 hours.

The province has also confirmed two more deaths related to COVID – bringing the total number of deaths since the onset of the pandemic to 2,839.

One-quarter of today's new cases (137 cases) are from Toronto Public Health, while 131 cases were reported by Peel Public Health, and 58 were reported by each of Ottawa Public Health and York Region Public Health.

Just over 60 per cent of today's new cases involve people under the age of 40. 

More than 42,500 tests were completed over the past 24 hours and since the pandemic began, 3,808,226 tests have been administered in Ontario. There is a backlog of more than 65,000 tests awaiting results. 

To-date, Public Health Ontario has confirmed 49,831 COVID-19 cases in the province, and has reported 42,796 of those as recovered. 

As of today, there are 112 people who are hospitalized in Ontario with the coronavirus. Public Health notes a number of hospitals (approximately 35) did not submit data for Sept. 25, which is common on weekends. Officials anticipate the number of hospitalized patients may increase when reporting compliance increases.

According to the data, there are 28 COVID patients in intensive care and 16 COVID patients on ventilators throughout the province; both small increases over yesterday. 

There are 17 known active cases in Northern Ontario. 

The breakdown for the health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health - 32 cases, rate of 28 per 100,000 population. There are two known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 38 cases, rate of 29.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 40 cases. There is one known active case.
  • Porcupine Health Unit - 82, rate of 98.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 82 cases. There are five known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 104 cases, rate of 52.3 per 100,000 population. There are three known active cases.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 19 cases. There are no known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit - 51 cases, rate of 58.2 per 100,000. There are four known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 106 cases, rate of 70.7 per 100,000. There are two known active cases.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 335.2.
