Because of COVID-19 protocols, the 2020 City of Elliot Lake Civic Awards may be going virtual.

Elliot Lake Culture and Recreation Manager Darla Hennessey explained suggested changes in a report coming to Elliot Lake City Council next Monday night.

In her report, Hennessey wrote, "Since 1971, the Mayor and Council for the City of Elliot Lake have been recognizing individuals who have improved the quality of life in the community by selfless contributions of time, skill and energy."

"With this year being COVID-19 the Civic Awards will have to take a different process. All nominations will be forwarded as in the past years with the selection being the same as past years. In 2019, a member of the Committee produced a more thorough fact sheet to be filled in and dropped off at City Hall or emailed to the Coordinator of the event.

"Attached to this report is the new Criteria to be completed by those individuals who are nominating a deserving citizen.

"In past years the criteria had 8 different points that the nominee was expected to meet. With the new format suggested more information in more detail will be helpful in the selection of the nominee," added Hennessey.

"For the year 2020, this award will be done more on a virtual basis. Nominators will complete the attached nomination form and upon completion of the Civic Award Nominations, they will be forwarded to the members of the Civic Award Committee consisting of Ken Pierce, Rhona Guertin, Darla Hennessey and Dan Gagnon, CAO.

"Notices will be posted on the city's website. Nominations will be open until the 27th October 2020 after such time the Committee will meet and select the recipient. this recommendation will be forward to the Committee of the Whole on the 2nd November 2020 for approval.

Hennessy concluded, "The Winner will then be announced on the 9th November and awarded at the 23rd November at the Council Meeting.

If accepted by City Council, nominators will be able to download a form from the city's website to be completed and returned to the Committee.

The matter goes to the next regular meeting of Elliot Lake Council on Monday night in the City Hall Council Chamber at 7:00 pm.

The meeting will be live-streamed on the city website and televised live on Eastlink Cable Community Channel 10.
