As the impact of COVID-19 begins to be felt on the local economy, Sault College Employment Solutions is continuing to operate to meet the needs of both job seekers and employers. In accord with the need for social distancing, Employment Solutions is now offering all services remotely over the phone and through email, text and other virtual means.

“We’re in an unprecedented situation with COVID-19 and without question it’s affecting the availability of jobs and hiring,” said Maggie Catterick, director of Employment Solutions. “That being said, the message we want to share is that for anyone looking for a job, thinking of changing careers, or considering retraining, now is a good time to do the initial work. For the individual job seeker, this is the right time to develop a strategy for when the economy ramps up again and to be prepared for when opportunities start to appear.”

For job seekers, Employment Solutions offers one-on-one job search assistance and support. Each new Employment Solutions client works directly with an on-staff employment consultant who can help them research which sectors and jobs are promising in the local labour market, explore education and training programs, and obtain assistance developing their resumes, cover letters, and online applications. All services are available free of charge.

Right now, initial phone meetings with employment consultants can be arranged on a same-day basis, usually with minimal wait time. Job seekers in Sault Ste. Marie and area can request a phone meeting with an employment consultant by calling 705-945-0705 or by emailing [email protected]. Job seekers in the Blind River, East Algoma, and North Shore areas can phone toll-free at 888-356-2836 or email [email protected] to be connected with a consultant from the Employment Solutions Blind River office. To be eligible for service, prospective clients must be 15 years of age or older, not attending school full-time, and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Employment Solutions is also continuing to work with local employers, both those still operating as essential services and those that are currently closed due to COVID-19 but preparing for a return to operations. Employment Solutions can assist businesses with recruiting and screening applicants, as well as with assisting employees who have been temporarily laid off with referrals to service providers and government programs.
