Core Competencies and Skills Required

  • Must have a minimum Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent, and must be willing to successfully complete the in-house Bricklayer training program.
  • Successful completion of an entrance aptitude test
  • Minimum 3 months experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) in Masonry or 6 months of proven refractory, masonry, concrete application as a labourer is a must.
  • Team player with excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal and leadership abilities.
  • Self-starter and able to work effectively with minimal direction.
  • Good analytical and problem solving/decision making abilities.
  • Commitment to healthy and safe work practices and sustainable environmental practices.
  • Will work in confined spaces in all departments within Algoma while performing functions of the Refractory Mason trade.
  • Must not be afraid of heights and successfully complete working at heights training and man lift training within 3 months.

Applicants must provide up to date resume and proof of education, i.e. diploma and transcripts as well as related experience.

Successful candidates will progress to the above tradesperson’s level to work with firebrick and other refractory materials to walls, arches and floors in the construction of furnaces or lining of furnaces and various structures throughout the Steelworks.

Graduation will require successful completion of the in-house Bricklayer Trainee program as provided by Essar Steel Algoma or other training facilities as well as comprehensive In-Field Training in various areas of the Steelworks.
