With only days left before Canadians go to the polls to vote in the Oct. 21 federal election, the Rhinoceros Party – a registered political party in Canada – has announced it is running a candidate in the riding of Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing (AMK).

Eric Ayora, aka Le Marquis de Marmalade, is running for the Rhino Party as a protest through humour. Le Marquis de Marmalade is his registered candidate name.

He said he was using the name before the writ was dropped nearly 40 days ago by Prime Minister Trudeau and was able to fulfill the legal obligations required to become a candidate.

Ayora, 55, grew up in Kapuskasing but now spends his time going back and forth from Val Rita in northern Ontario and Toronto.

The Rhinoceros Party was founded in 1963 by a group of humorists led by Montreal Doctor Jacques Ferron. Its express purpose is to poke fun at federal election campaigns.

Ayora is up against Conservative Dave Williamson, Liberal Heather Wilson, NDP representative Carol Hughes, PPC candidate Dave DeLisle, and Green Party candidate Max Chapman.

Polls are open on election day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
