THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Police are looking into the discovery of a gravestone buried in the backyard of a residence.

Homeowner Kelly Teras says the headstone, bearing the names of two people, was unearthed at his Christina Street address Tuesday by a Union Gas crew that was rerouting a natural gas line.

Teras, who bought the house two years ago, says he was contacted at work by the company, "saying they had to stop  progress on rerouting the gas line because they came across a grave site...probably one of the last things I expected to hear from a phone call."

He was told the headstone was "fully intact" and "fully engraved," and a couple of pieces of wood were found nearby, but as far as he knows "they didn't find anything like a body or anything like that."

Teras said Union Gas immediately implemented protocol and contacted Thunder Bay Police.

"The headstone was removed. I believe they will be doing further research on the names that were on the stone to see if they can contact any kind of relatives to figure out what they're going to be doing with it."

Teras added that he appreciated the professionalism of the Union Gas staff, police and forensics investigators who came to his property.

As of late Wednesday morning, police had not issued any statements about the status of the investigation.

A photo that was said to be of the gravestone was posted on social media but was subsequently removed.
