WATCH: Feds to extend wage subsidy program until December

Trudeau also said an announcement will come later this week regarding the safe restart program for Canadian provinces

Update:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today that his government would extend the wage subsidy program to support businesses during COVID-19.

The program, which covers 75 per cent of ages for eligible businesses across the country, was initially launched in April. It has previously been extended to run through the summer, but has been extended further until December.

In a press conference today, Trudeau also said that his government is still working on the safe restart program with provinces.

In early June, he announced that a $14-billion 'safe restart agreement' to restart the economy has been placed before premiers for consideration. The federal proposal includes funding for personal protective equipment for healthcare workers and businesses, in addition to supports for child care, seniors, cities and municipalities. Many premiers, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, said that this would not be enough.

Trudeau said more details on both programs will be provided later this week.

The prime minister also publicly apologized for the WE controversy that has gained media attention in the last week.

The deal with WE to administer a $900-million federal student grant program was called off earlier this month, and Trudeau has admitted that he did not recuse himself from both the discussion and decision to approve the contract despite his family’s ties, arguing that the deal was recommended by non-partisan public service.
