RED PINE ISLAND, Ont. -- A 62-year woman was killed by a black bear on a secluded Rainy Lake island.

Provincial police received a call from Red Pine Island on Sunday evening about concern of a bear attack, after a woman had gone to check on her dogs and not returned.

Officers responded to the island, which is located just west of Sandpoint Island close to the international border, and found the victim near a bear. The woman was observed to be dead and the bear was dispatched.

The responding officers also encountered two other bears at the scene that were a threat during the investigation. Provincial police said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is determining next steps and will seek OPP assistance as required.

Police said there are no other residences on the island and that there is no significant public safety threat.
