Much-needed economic stimulus and a boost for health care are the reasons the Ontario Liberal Party has promised to encourage immigration in northern Ontario.

Algoma-Manitoulin's Liberal candidate, Tim Vine, said like Quebec, the Liberals will bring skilled newcomers to the north to drive the economy and promote health care services.

"The Ontario Liberal northern platform will deliver on long-standing demands from northern mayors for an immigration plan that attracts new Canadians to cities and regions across northern Ontario and ensure skilled labour matches the jobs needed to build and grow the northern economy," Vine said in a press release.

He referred to this week’s announcement of the northern platform as his own proud moment, noting he and others in the northern candidate caucus worked to inform this platform, and consulted with many stakeholders to bring forward the plan.

"As a hospital administrator, I am often presented with policies developed in Toronto, that just won’t work for our situation here,” said Vine.

“We have come up with a northern platform that supports and finds solutions unique to our northern context.”

He went on to say that a DeLuca government would appoint a provincial minister of immigration and that the province needs to have a say in ensuring the nurses, engineers, and heavy equipment operators who want to come to Canada are allowed to live in northern Ontario.

Vine explained that's how to build the Ring of Fire, attract nurses to provide care and get the population growing.
