City looking for workers on election day

The City of Elliot Lake is looking to hire workers for a number of positions needed to staff the 2022 municipal election on Oct. 24.

Among the positions available include deputy returning officer (DRO), registration officer, tabulator attendant and greeter.

Pay ranges from $300, a flat rate for the deputy returning officer position which includes training and material review prior to election day plus all day service on election day; to $230 for an election-day greeter. 

All jobs require all-day work on voting day (8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.), along with training for their position ahead of election day.

To be eligible for municipal election jobs, you have to be at least 18 years old and legally authorized to work in Canada. Along with that, you can't be a candidate or a registered third party advertiser, an immediate family member of a candidate or someone working in support of or in opposition to,a candidate.

Preference will be given to applicants with previous election experience and people who are bilingual.

A registration officer gets paid a $250 flat rate for setting up the registration desk and polling place, explaining the registration process, verifying electors’ proof of identity and registering new electors.

A tabulator attendant also gets a $250 flat rate and the position includes doing training and material review prior to voting day along with working all day on Oct. 24. The attendants are responsible for operating the vote tabulator,  processing ballots through it and making sure the vote is kept secret. 

Greeters get a $230 flat-rate payment for working the entire voting day, plus taking training and performing other duties prior to it.

The greeters are responsible for welcoming voters to the polling location, making sure they have proper identification, and guiding them to the appropriate area for processing prior to casting their ballots.
