The city was reporting an active fire Thursday evening at the Elliot Lake landfill.

Crews appeared to have the fire under control by around 8 p.m., according to a city news release.

Earlier, residents were being urged to stay away from the area to allow fire crews to do their jobs.

The city also urged residents near the fire zone to take precautions as air quality could still be affected after the fire is out.

Measures may include limiting time outdoors and ensuring that windows in your home are closed, the city said.

The amnesty day scheduled for Friday (June 2) in which tipping fees would be waived at the landfill is cancelled, the city said, and the landfill will remain closed until further notice.

Access to Esten Lake boat launch, which was closed while crews dealt with the fire, was expected to be open Friday morning.
